Email Just Urban Legend

Commented by Sarastro (7/16/09) over at Atlas Shrug, on one of her posts:
Quote: "In case you're wondering who Black Jack Pershing was: Just before World War I, there were a number of terrorist attacks on the United States forces in the Philippines by Muslim extremists. So General Pershing captured 50 terrorists and had them tied to posts for execution. He then had his men bring in two pigs and slaughtered them in front of the now horrified terrorists. Muslims detest pork because they believe pigs are filthy animals. some of them simply refuse to eat it, while others won't even touch pigs at all, nor any of their by-products. To Muslims, eating, touching a pig, its meat, its blood, etc. is to be instantly barred from paradise [and those virgins] and doomed to Hell. The soldiers then soaked their bullets in the pigs blood, and proceeded to execute 49 of the terrorists by firing squad. The soldiers then dug a big hole, dumped in the bodies and covered them with pig blood, entrails, etc. They let the 50th man go. And for the next 42 years, there was not a single Muslim attack anywhere in the world. Maybe it is time for this historical action to repeat itself. The question is, where do we find another Black Jack Pershing?" Unquote.

A good rebel-rousing story, but untrue. This story has been emailed around for a few years, but the truth can't seem to get as much attention.
Wikipedia has a very interesting bio on Gen. John J. Pershing and how he got the nick name "Black Jack". The tragic loss of his wife and 3 daughters to a fire is also reported, but his son survived to become another noted soldier. Read it all here.

Urban legends reported the sources who claim the story as false were; Dr. Frank Vandiver, professor of History of Texas A&M, who wrote a book on Gen. Pershing, and Raeed Tayed, of the American Muslim Assoc of N. America. Raeed also called the part about "Muslims being barred from paradise for touching pork" as ridiculous, and is a "offensive caricature of Muslim beliefs", so said the Anti-Defamation League.

So if you get this story in a email, delete, PARTICULARLY IF THEY ASK FOR DONATIONS!!
